Maria de Lurdes Ribeiro Pintosofias
Graduated in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) in 1997, obtained a master degree in Experimental Pathology from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra in 2003. She obtained her PhD in Veterinary Sciences from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) in 2008. She is currently an Auxiliary Professor of the Veterinary Sciences Department at School of Agrarian and Veterinary Sciences, UTAD. Apart from being a veterinary anatomic pathologist at the UTAD Laboratory of Histology and Anatomic Pathology since 1999, she participated in several research projects regarding animal experimentation and embryogenesis in birds, rodents and zebrafish. She also participates in projects regarding the characterization and monitoring of diseases in wild animals. She supervised a PhD and several master thesis as well as author and co-author scientific publications on the aforementioned research areas.
Her primary fields of research interest are:
- Comparative study and pathogenesis of exotic and wild animals diseases, namely zoonotic and emerging diseases as well as diseases related to poor management and global climatic changes. Inflammatory response characterization in the different species of mammals, birds and reptiles.
- Alternative animal models: Zebrafish (D. rerio) as an alternative model in animal experimentation, with particular emphasis on the evaluation of anaesthetic agents during early embryogenesis.
