Maria Madalena Vieira Pintosofias
Graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 1984 (UTAD – University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro). Master of Science in Animal Production in 1999 (UTAD). PhD in Veterinary Science in 2006 (“Salmonella in slaughtered pigs”).Previously to the academic activity (1994-1998), worked as official veterinarian especially on meat inspection at slaughterhouse. The academic activity as a teacher at UTAD began in 1999 and since 2006 she´s Associated Professor at the Veterinarian Science Department, lecturing on food inspection and food safety mainly in the Integrated Master of Veterinary Medicine and other Master courses related to Food Safety. Additionally, teaches and is the scientific coordinator of several advanced training for Veterinarian and hunters in the field of game meat inspection under cooperation with the Veterinarian National Authorities.
Researcher of the Animal and Veterinary Research Centre (Since 2006) – UTAD - where, coordinated (2010-2013) the Research Group on Food Quality and Safety and Public Health. Presently, is Vice-Director of this Center. The main research focus is on zoonotic diseases and bacterial biological hazards, meat inspection in slaughtered (and hunted) animals for human consumption (mainly game, swine and poultry) as well as animal welfare. In these areas published international and national scientific documents in journals, books and conferences, and participated in national and international research projects. Also supervising several Master and PhD research projects, some of them in collaboration with the industry and Veterinary National Authority. It is responsible for several protocols that aim to promote collaborative work, development and training in food hygiene and safety.
Since 2015 July is responsible for the service of Trichinella analyses of the Laboratory of Technology, Quality and Food Safety Laboratory in UTAD.
Since 2008 is member of the WAVES-Portugal directive board (Wild Animal Vigilance Euromediterranean Society), having held the position of president between 2012 and 2017 and President of WAVES International between 2015 and 2017.
